CAEN N568/N568B MODULEs

We currently have two CAEN modules in the K600 vault.

The serial numbers are: 41 and 59

 

One module is set to be used with NEGATIVE input (Ser n 41) and the other with POSITIVE input (Ser n 59). Which one is which is also written on the module case.

 

FAST OUTPUT

This is due to the fact that the polarity of the FAST output can be set ONLY by shortcircuiting two pins as indicated in the picture below.

Since the FAST output is normally used as input for a CFD the polarity has to be negative. Then if the input in the CAEN module is negative the FAST output should NON-INVERTED while if the input is positive it should be INVERTED.

The modification is done for each of the 16 boards in one of the two CAEN module so be aware that the boards are not interchangeable! Please note down if you will change some of them!!!

The polarity is the only setting that can be modified for the FAST output. The rise/fall time, amplitude and gain cannot be modified. The FAST output is set to have the same rise time of the input signal and a fall time shorter than the real one since this signal it is thought to carry only the time information and not the energy information.

 

OUTPUT

The settings for the amplified OUTPUT (the normal output) can be set by remote control.

Among those settings:

OUTPUT CONFIGURATION - can be set to be direct (0) or inverted (1)

OUTPUT POLARITY - can be set to be positive (0) or negative (1) according to what has been set for the output polarity.

 

Ex: if the input is positive and the output configuration is set to be inverted, the output polarity is Negative and this information must be transferred to the module’s internal electronics for the optimization of the Baseline restorer stage.

 

  • If we have a POSITIVE INPUT and we want a NEGATIVE OUTPUT we should set OUTPUT CONFIG = 1 and OUTPUT POLARITY = 1

  • If we have a POSITIVE INPUT and we want a POSITIVE OUTPUT we should set OUTPUT CONFIG = 0 and OUTPUT POLARITY = 0

  • If we have a NEGATIVE INPUT and we want a POSITIVE OUTPUT we should set OUTPUT CONFIG = 1 and OUTPUT POLARITY = 0

  • If we have a NEGATIVE INPUT and we want a NEGATIVE OUTPUT we should set OUTPUT CONFIG = 0 and OUTPUT POLARITY = 1

 

10x OUTPUT

These outputs are amplified by 10 times.

 

OFFSET

Allow to add an offset value to shift the baseline of the output. Allowed value are from -75mV to +210mV with Positive Output Polarity and from +75mV to -210mV with Negative Output Polarity

 

INPUT SIGNALS ALLOWED

Positive or negative pulses with rise time ≥ 18ns, amplitude 8V (absolute value); 50Ω impedance
